Must Haves for Spring 2020 – Head Scarf Edition

Trends always come back. Something that could have been popular years ago that has been replaced with a new trend, will always come back.

One trend that is a must have this Spring season is silk head scarves. You are starting to see them everywhere. On the runway, Angela Missoni is wrapping models heads in beautiful silk scarves. In the stores, retailers are outfitting their mannequins with colorful head scarves. They come in all different patterns and colors and they add something new to a simple look.

The above look is from the Celine Spring 2020 Ready To Wear Runway show. Hedi Slimane created this look and many others, where models wore different patterned head scarves.

These scarves can be worn in many different ways, they are simple and versatile. Dominique Aulisio, online boutique owner of Dominique’s Boutique recently posted an outfit idea including a head scarf on her Instagram page.

Dominique’s most recent post displays a simple look with a cute hair scarf that can be worn in many different ways and can be used to jazz up a simple top and pair of jeans.

People are getting creative with their advertising in the current times and are posting a lot on social media platforms to attract more customers virtually. TikTok has become and increasingly popular form of social media recently and head scarves have been a huge trend on this app.

Charli Damelio and Addison Rae are two of the most famous TikTokers, getting millions of likes and views on every one of their posts. They play a huge part in setting trends for millions of girls who watch their videos. These are just two pictures of them wearing head scarves in their videos.

This trend is everywhere for this Spring season. From the runway to retailers to social media, girls of all ages are excited to incorporate head scarves into their next look.

How to Wear Mustard

This fun yellow color is one that everyone can incorporate into their wardrobe. You may think to stray away from Mustard at first, but once you give it a try, you won’t regret it.

Versatility: Mustard works for all different articles of clothing, and all different fabrications. Natacha Ramsay-Levi designed beautiful mustard looks for Chloe in Fashion Week last month. The models in this show portray uniqueness and confidence in the designs they wore, which is exactly what the color is aiming to do.

My favorite look from the Chloe show was this one above. The different fabrications and shades of mustard that Ramsay-Levi used for this look show the versatility of the color. Mustard is a color that women wear to feel empowered and confident, and it really makes someone stand out in a crowd.

Go For Simplicity: If you want to dress down an outfit, pair a mustard yellow blazer or jacket with a simple pair of leggings just like Anthony Vaccarello did in the Saint Laurent show this year at NYFW. This is a super simple and comfortable look, but the color still brings that uniqueness to the outfit that one wearing it wants.

Jewel Tones: Another tip for a super fun look would be to pair mustard with jewel tones. Mustard is a muted yellow, not the same as a bright sunshine color. When you pair mustard with jewel tones like green, blue, or purple, it will act as the neutral. In the Zimmermann show, Nicky Zimmermann created a beautiful dress featuring jewel toned purples throughout, with mustard yellow tassels on a neck scarf, complimented by mustard lace-up boots. The main color in this look is not the mustard, but it definitely pops well against the purple.

Wearing mustard is a statement in itself. If you want to be confident and empower others, wear this fun yellow color. Celebrities have been catching on to this trend as well.

Go for Comfort: Last month, Rihanna released her latest Fenty line at Bergdorf Goodman. In her first appearance back in LA after the release, Rihanna was spotted in a bright mustard yellow hoodie dress from her collection. This mustard dress is a standout dress that incorporates causality and comfort with fashion.

You can dress mustard up, or you can dress it down, just make sure that you are ready to stand out in a crowd.

Carolina Herrera NYFW 2020

Carolina Herrera, is a brand designed by designer Wes Gordon. During the show many were wondering if this is the beginning of a more minimal brand, but Gordon replied by saying, “I think she is still pretty maximal,” which is definitely displayed in the bold designs. This fall 2020 collection is called “the grand gesture”, he explained his vision by saying “when I was sketching or draping, I tried to identify the essence of what made the piece special, and then I went all in. It could be a sleeve shape, embroidery, or color, but it’s quite purified.”

Above are some of my favorite looks from the show. Gordonwas a big player in the shade and design of the clothing. He chose some very bold blues, pinks, and mustard yellows, but also plain black, white, and darkers forest green for the colors of his garments. A lot of the shapes of his designs were capes, and asymmetrical. A lot of the girls were wearing gold or black simple flats. He added some tassel belts as accessories, some ruffles and some of the girls even wore a mesh type veil over their face. All of the girls wore their hair with a middle part, which is a trend that I saw all throughout the shows. His designs were question about being minimal because a lot of them were one color garments, although he did have some floral designs. But the designs them-self were very maximal.

I did very much like this collection, while it is a bit different than the designers I tend to like, he did a great job with the designs and I can see a lot of these trends lasting a while.

Ulla Johnson NYFW 2020

Ulla Johnson is known for a love for prints. In her collection this year, her main focus was the silhouette of the garments. Ulla Johnson is another designer that I really enjoy and I loved a lot of her runway looks from last week. Ulla Johnson’s collection this year was called Victoriana by way of Z.

These pictures above are some of my favorite looks from her show last week. A lot of the looks featured a lambskin leather. The silhouettes were a big proponent of the styles she showed. She also introduced some fun animal print and floral patterns throughout the collection. The main colors that she displayed consisted of emerald green, rose pink, brown, and bright mustard yellows. The styles consisted of puffy sleeves, ruffles, tiered flowy styles of skirts and dresses. She also introduced some crochet lace styles as well. The most of the shoes that she featured were heels or boots with gold chains around the ankles. She also styled the looks with gold jewelry and asymmetrical earrings. Some of the looks from this collection remind me of the Zimmermann collection that I love.

Zimmermann NYFW 2020

My absolute FAVORITE show at the NYFW this past week was Zimmermann. I love Zimmermann for the bohemian designs, which is such an inspiration for me. I currently work at Free People, which is a very bohemian brand, and Zimmermann is a designer that Free People bases some of their designs off of. Zimmermann’s collection was titeled Lady Beetle, it was inspired by lucky charms, fortune-telling, and superstitions.

There were lots of great trends in the Zimmermann 2020 Fall Runway collection that I loved. Ruffles, puffy sleeves, fringe, and flowy dresses and skirts were huge trends in this collection. These pictures above were some of my favorite looks from the collection, but another huge part of the collection consisted of velvet in dark shades like black and purple. Zimmermann also had pinks and dark purples, gold and other metallic colors, white lacey material and colorful plaids. Some of the patterns that Zimmermann featured were florals and graphics with words using glitter and satin paisley designs. The majority of the shoes that the models were wearing were lace up boots and all the girls wearing tights were wearing sheer black tights with a star polka dot design. The jewelry that she featured in her collection were gold details, and she features asymmetrical earrings on a lot of the looks.

Zimmermann’s collection was very bohemian, mixed with some grunge touches. I loved this show so much, it gave me amazing inspiration and I wish I could have everything in this collection.

All About Brandon Harden

Tuesday, February 11th we had the pleasure to meet Brandon T. Harden in class. Brandon is from Texas, and when he was beginning his journalism career, he worked for a men’s fashion magazine there. He then moved to Philadelphia, and now is working for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He also explained his job as being a reporter, “I don’t write columns though,” instead, he writes based off of facts. He explained how “sometimes I have a point of view,” he will often “find sources who will say what I want them to say,” in order to write the article that he wants to write.

He said his day to day work consists of going out in search of new stories to write. After meeting Brandon, he seemed very invested in the work that he does. He seemed to really love his job and was very excited to come and speak with our class.

The Hottest Trend: Oscar’s Red Carpet 2020

Shades of pink were a huge trend at the Oscars Red Carpet this year. The first picture is of Brie Larson, or Captain Marvel, who was wearing a beautiful Celine dress. The second picture is of Regina King, actress and director, wearing a blush pink Versace dress. The third picture is of Julia Butters, from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, wearing an adorable bubblegum pink ruffle Christian Siriano dress.

All About Emily Nein’s Style

Emily Nein is currently a 22 year old college senior, studying Fashion Merchandising and Management at Jefferson University. I interviewed Emily asking her all about her personal style! The first question that I asked Emily was: how would you describe your personal style? To that she responded, “it depends what I’m doing, say it’s the weekday and I’m going to class, I’m usually wearing leggings and a hoodie with some white sneakers, it’s usually always the same.” She proceeded to explain the different types of outfits she would wear to different occasions: “if I go to work or I’m going out, I’ll put on something from Free People, that kind of shows who I am,” she described this by saying, “it can be free spirited, it can be comfy cute, like a graphic tee shirt and a pair of denim distressed jeans, or it can be some skinny black jeans, some Dr. Martens and a crop top.” Emily loves to be free spirited with the clothing that she wears, while also maintaining comfort, but always looking cute! In the first picture, you can see Emily this past Saturday sporting a cropped denim distressed jacket with a cropped Rolling Stones tee shirt from Free People, and some cute and comfy black joggers! This picture definitely represents her personal style.

The next question that I asked her was: what is your favorite item that you have on today? To this she replied, “definitely my slip on checkered vans, I wear them literally every day of my life, this is my second pair. Because I just destroy them in three seconds. But, I love them and they are just so comfortable and easy to wear.”

I then followed up that question by asking: how does this item define your personal style? To this Emily said “I think it might define my personal style because they are easy to wear, and very accessible. They’re very inexpensive, so to throw on a $50 pair of vans, and go out in them, and ruin them, and go to class in them, and just be comfy is what i look for.”

Overall, Emily has a cute and comfy style. Everyday she adds in some of her favorite pieces to spice up her looks, and she always looks great doing it!

Grammy’s 2020

Claudia Sulewski and Finneas O’Connell wore my favorite looks at the 2020 Grammy red carpet. Claudia is a Youtube star who became an actor, and is a social media influencer who I have loved since I was in middle school. She is now dating Finneas O’Connell who is a singer, actor, producer and much more, he is also Billie Eilish’s brother. Both were wearing custom Gucci styles to accompany one another. I love this couple, and I love their looks because they look so great together. The simple style of the dress allows Claudia to shine in the blue and black sequins, and the fun floral print of Finneas’s jacket make for a great photo and pair. This is also something that I would wear if ever had a chance to go to the Grammy’s, as Claudia has always been a fashion icon for me.

My Style

My style is edgy. My style can be transformed from day to night. This first picture of me was taken on a Saturday night, right before I went out in the city with my friends! I love crop tops and jeans, these are some of my go to pieces for any time. I get a lot of my style inspiration from Instagram bloggers. I love to follow the trends and follow all that the young famous people are wearing! I also get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, and make the styles my own. This was a super simple outfit, I paired this long sleeve black turtleneck crop top from Urban Outfitters, with these two tone mom jeans, also from Urban Outfitters. This look shows how you don’t always need lots of accessories to look cute!

This second picture was taken of me on a Thursday afternoon in the city. My favorite store is Free People, I have been working there for three years. If you open up my closet at home, it’s like walking into a Free People store, because almost everything I own is from there! This Leopard bomber jacket is one of my absolute favorites, from Free People! I love animal print and I get so many compliments on it whenever I wear it. I paired this look with the same black crop top from before, these white ripped cropped flare jeans from Free People and a pair of maroon platform Dr. Marten’s. This look is much better for the day time, but still shows my edgy style.
